GOSPEL OF MATTHEW [14]
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.” [Matthew 11:21-24]
“Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!” [Matthew 18:7]
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.” [Matthew 23:13]

“But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.” [Luke 11:42]
“Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places.” [Luke 11:43]
“Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.” [Luke 11:44]
“But He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.” [Luke 11:46]

Real Christianity 
That’s a whole lot of terrible woes — and no one will be able to say the devil made me do it — one’s own pridefulness and the choice to not repent is the most destructive and dreadful woe of all.

It’s the attempted (successful, in their eyes) glorification of sinful human flesh instead of the crucifixion thereof. It’s the covert support of corruption and unrighteousness with an overt morally superior virtue-signaling outer cloak—whitewashed sepulchers—the grateful dead—faux religious leaders, powerful money masters, apex business kingpins, sycophant politicians, corrupt cultural influencers, evil authoritarians, sold-out celebrities, and all their naive, cowardly followers and supporters.
Human pride truly does go before destruction. Unless one destroys it one will eventually be destroyed by it and possibly destroy whoever is connected to it. Pride and haughtiness are major support pillars of sinful flesh. The word “haughty,” from the term “haughty spirit” referred to in Proverbs 16:18 is from the Hebrew גֹּבַהּ gôbahh, (go’-bah) and is defined as: “elation, grandeur, arrogance:—excellency, haughty, height, exaltation, high, loftiness, pride.
Whoever wants true righteousness, a gift only made possible by the Lord Jesus, must be willing to destroy their pride, jettison their human haughtiness, and throw their corrupt human nature in a fire pit. Corruption must put on incorruption. It’s an act of the will in association with the Lord’s cleansing power.
If the Lord warned the people of His own nation in such a powerful way only to see the majority in control reject His warnings and rebukes and effectively insist on the total destruction and loss of everything instead of merely destroying their pride and arrogance and getting right with God, what chance does any other nation have? What happened to Jerusalem in 70AD is the architype of what will happen everywhere else and to everyone else without real repentance and submission to a holy God who loves and saves.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your statement, “By the time the woes come, it’s apparently too late.”
Especially when you read of the angel in Revelations, proclaiming the woes, and overlay it with the fact that despite all that happens, no one repents.

thanks RJ; there is still time to repent, even though most won’t, described in Revelation 9:20, “The rest of mankind, who were not killed by the three plagues, did not repent…nor did they repent of their murders, sorceries, sexual immorality, or their thefts”

Thank you Yvonne. Good word. There is pretty much always time for the individual to repent but not necessarily enough time for nations. Once they go beyond the point of no return there is no hope. As you know, of course, many Israelites repented during John’s ministry, the Lord’s ministry, and during the years of the Early Church until the very end in 70AD, but not enough to save the nation.

Thanks Linda. I cannot find it but your point is duly noted. There is certainly a lot to ponder in all these passages but I thought it best to include them all so there could be a good accounting of the Lord’s purpose for His many “Woe” proclamations.
